Dedicated to finding the cause of adult-onset dystonia

The Irish Dystonia Research Group is a team of neurologists and laboratory based scientists working together to find the cause, or causes, of adult onset dystonia. We aim both to discover genes that cause adult onset primary tortion dystonia and to understand the mechanisms of this form of dystonia and thus eventually new treatments.

What is Dystonia?

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder which may affect anyone at any age.

It is characterised by involuntary muscle contractions which force certain parts of the body into abnormal, sometimes painful, movements or postures.

Dystonia can affect any part of the body including the arms and legs, trunk, neck, eyelids, face, or vocal cords

Who we are

The Irish Dystonia Research Group is multidisciplinary comprising neurologists, engineers, and other scientists working together to discover genes that cause adult onset primary torsion dystonia, to understand the mechanisms of this form of dystonia, and ultimately to develop new treatments.
